10 things to do in Cape Town this winter
We’re all hoping for a rainy winter to end the drought in the Mother City. But whatever the weather brings, here are a few suggestions for some fun and entertaining adventures close to Welgelegen Boutique Guest House:
1. First Thursdays
Every first Thursday of the month, Cape Town City Centre opens up its galleries and stores in the evening. You can meander from one to the next for free. Many of the galleries and stores offer a glass of wine and, if you are lucky, a small bite to eat. This is a lovely way to experience Cape Town with all it has to offer.
2. Mushroom Hunting
Winter brings mushrooms, of all shapes and sizes. The mushroom picking season runs from June to August each year. Delheim makes the best of the season by offering a specialised mushroom hunting tour. All you need to do is to go onto computicket.com to purchase a ticket, and then hunt away!
3. The Fugard Theatre
The Fugard is one of Cape Town’s iconic theatres. It is located in the District 6 area on Caledon Street, only a 2.5 km drive from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House , and is named after Athol Fugard, the great South African playwright. The theatre showcases local and world-acclaimed productions and films.
4. Trail running
For the more adventurous souls, why not try a trail run over and along Table Mountain, Devils Peak or Newlands Forest? The crisp air and amazing views are worth the climb.
Not a trail runner? That is not a problem; all of these trails can be followed at any pace.
5. The Cape Town Comedy Club
Situated at the V&A Waterfront, the Cape Town Comedy Club is the perfect place for a laugh and a meal. You can expect to watch performances by the likes of Marc Lottering, Barry Hilton, Trevor Noah and more. Originally called Jou Ma Se Comedy Club, the Cape Town Comedy Club offers local and international laughs for all who visit.
6. Honest Chocolate Café (The Secret Gin Bar)
Pure indulgence can be found at the Honest Chocolate Café. This artisanal chocolatier was born and bred in Cape Town, using traditional and old school techniques. It boasts specialities such as Mexican spiced and orange hot chocolate.
7. Iziko Museums, District 6 Museum, South African Jewish Museum etc.
Cape Town is home to some of the most amazing museums showcasing South Africa’s diverse history and many talents. Iziko has museums all around the Western Cape. Travel from the Bo-kaap Museum through to the Groot Constantia Manor House, or from the Planetarium to the South African National Gallery.
8. The Crypt
The Crypt is a jazz club in the heart of Cape Town. You can enjoy dinner and a live jazz show here. Many local talented jazz artists have performed at The Crypt. It is a historical meeting place, situated underneath St. George’s Cathedral, where international and African jazz cultures have joined together in a uniquely South African blend.
9. Kalk Bay
This quaint little harbour town, only 30km from Welgelegen Boutique Guest House in Cape Town, is packed with a variety of experiences. Choosing where to eat can take a while with so many restaurants on offer: Brass Bell, Harbour House, Olympia Café, Cape to Cuba, Kalkies and, not to forget, the Ice Café, where you can find interesting ice cream flavours like black-cherry and brandy or coconut and ginger. All the ice-cream is made without eggs. The Kalk Bay Book Store is one of a kind. You will not find many commercially published books here but, instead, many South African authors and some harder to find rare South African classics.
10. Wine tasting in Constantia Valley
Wine any day in the Western Cape is a priority. Was it not the Italians who said a glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away? Constantia is home to some of the oldest wine farms in the Cape. Wineries to visit include Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia, Constantia Glen, Eagles Nest, Steenberg Vineyards and more. Plan a day trip stopping at each farm, ending off with a late lunch at your last stop.
These are only a couple of activities to do in Cape Town. Contact Welgelegen Boutique Guest House if you are travelling in the Mother City and are looking for accommodation.
